On September 25 Chairman of the Military Committee (MC) Air Chief Marshal Sir Stuart William Peach (United Kingdom - Air Force) conducted an official visit to Lithuania.
He met with Speaker of the Lithuanian Parliament Viktoras Pranckietis, Chief of Defence Lt Gen Valdemaras Rupšys, other representatives of the Lithuanian Armed Forces. The guest also visited the NATO Energy Security Centre of Excellence in Vilnius and received briefings on the regional security situation from the Lithuanian Armed Forces Defence Staff.
"The geopolitical situation in Europe remains tense. Therefore we are doing what has been committed to us and what we are able to influence. Lithuania must stay ready and strong in its defence in order to maintain the defence in NATO's eastern flank. Our aim is to be always among the strong links in the NATO chain , therefore Lithuania is investing two percent of GDP in the defence sector," Chief of Defence Lt Gen Valdemaras Rupšys said at the press conference.
Chairman of the Military Committee thanked Lithuania for active contribution to NATO operations, response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and for hosting NATO forces. He also congratulated Lithuania because a Lithuanian Navy ship, LNS Jotvingis command and supply ship commanded by a Lithuanian Navy officer is currently the flagship of SNMCMG1, she was commissioned in June and will carry out the duties until the end of the year.
„The pandemic has also amplified, made clearer, many of the existing tensions, when it comes to security all across the globe. We've seen Russia call for cessation of military activities by NATO without ceasing any of their activity. We also see state and non-state actors promoting disinformation and propaganda aimed at NATO and our people. So we counter these false narratives with facts," Air Chief Marshal Sir Stuart William Peach said.
"We are stronger and safer where we stand together," Chairman of the Military Committee Air Chief Marshal Sir Stuart William Peach said summing up his address. He also underlined the role of the media in countering disinformation by conveying accurate information to the public.
Chairman of the NATO Military Committee is the principal military advisor to the NATO Secretary General responsible for conveying consensus-based advice from the 30 Chiefs of Defence as the NATO Military Committee to NATO's political decision-making bodies.
