Two years ago, on June 26, military instructors from 7 partner nations in the United Kingdom-led Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) format and Germany, Canada, Australia and New Zealand joined the UK-led Operation Interflex for training military servicemembers, the extension of operation scope has resulted in 40 thousand trained Ukrainian troops in two years since. The operation was launched to provide basic military skills and know-how to members of the Armed Forces of Ukraine with a particular focus on urban area and entrenchment area action, as well as tactical medicine and engineering, while new knowledge and skills are tested in field training.
The fifth rotation of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Instructors Group formed by the Lithuanian Great Hetman Jonušas Radvila Training Regiment, General Adolfas Ramanauskas Warfare Training Centre, Division General Stasys Raštikis Warfare Training Centre and Dr. Jonas Basanavičius Military Medical Service is currently deployed. Over the two years, more than 100 instructors of the Lithuanian Armed Forces were involved training the annual approx. 400 Ukrainian warriors.
Lithuanian Armed Forces are also involved in the EU Military Assistance Mission in support of Ukraine (EUMAM Ukraine) which is planned to have ready approx. 1600 warriors over 2024. In 2023 Lithuanians trained 850 Ukrainian troops in 14 different courses in the German-led multinational military training programme. Lithuanians delivered training on arms handling, firing, medicine, engineering, trained units of different levels for offence and defence in urban and forested areas together with German, Belgian, Slovenian and Norwegian instructors.
Training courses for Ukrainians also take place on the Lithuanian soil. It is expected to result in 1600 trained Ukrainian troops according to 90 different programmes, including for combat engineers, marksmanship, instructors, signal, and other command and specialist programmes. Lithuania also trains demining experts as part of the Nordic-Lithuanian EOC Training Initiative. The Danish, Icelandic, Norwegian, Finish, Swedish and Lithuanian initiative encompasses transfer of demining expertise and supply of means necessary for the training which are passed on to the Ukrainian students after they graduate.
