PRT military medics performed surgeries on injured Afghan police officers

On 4 September, military medics of Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT-13) performed surgeries on three Afghan policemen.

The police officers were injured during their patrol after the improvised explosive device explosion in Chahar Sadah district, the province of Ghor (approx. 100 km from Chaghcharan). Fragments of the explosive device injured the police officers.

During the surgeries, fragments of the explosive device were removed. According to the commander of PRT Medical Department Maj. Vilius Kočiubaitis, all three surgeries went successfully and there was no threat to life.

A field hospital, which is located in Chaghcharan, is well-equipped; it has an autonomic power-station, conditioning system, and water-supply.

In the present period the 13th shift of PRT-13 is serving in Chaghcharan. PRT-13 is formed on the basis of King Mindaugas Motorised Infantry Battalion. Personnel of the Battalion participate in the multinational mission in Afghanistan for a second time.

The Lithuanian-led PRT in Ghor is a joint civilian-military mission, a part of NATO's International Security Assistance Forces (ISAF) that was launched in Ghor in summer 2005. The aim of this mission is to help the Government of Afghanistan to extend authority in the province, ensure security and create favourable conditions for the reconstruction of Ghor province.

Representatives from Denmark, Georgia, Japan, USA, Poland, Finland, Bulgaria, and Ukraine serve along with the Lithuanian military and civilian personnel in Ghor PRT camp, Chaghcharan.
