On September 6-7 Chief of Defence of Lithuania Lieutenant General Jonas Vytautas Žukas attended Northern European Chief of Defense Conference held by Commander of the U. S. European Command (EUCOM) General Curtis Scaparrotti and Chief of Defence of Norway Admiral Haakon Bruun-Hanssen in Oslo, capital of Norway, which focused on discussion on enhancement of regional security.

 

The Conference was attended by Chiefs of Defence and Sergeant Majors of Armed Forces of Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Poland, Lithuania, Norway, Finland, Sweden, and Germany, and the high representative for security, defence and military affairs of Iceland. Participants exchanged views on security threats, opportunities of cooperation and interoperability when responding to such threats and thus strengthening regional security.

 

The EUCOM-initiated conference is held once year on a rotational basis in one of the participating countries. It took place in Lithuania in January 2013.

 

Led by Gen C. Scaparrotti, the U. S. European Command is based in Stuttgart, Germany. It is responsible for training the U.S. forces in Europe, ensuring strategic access to the U.S., preventing military conflicts, providing conditions for the Alliance to strengthen partnership and fight international threats in order to protect and defence the U.S. EUCOM has roughly 50 thousand U.S. land, air, naval and special forces personnel in its command.
