Military Representative to NATO and the EU of Lithuania Maj Gen Vitalijus Vaikšnoras was nominated as Dean of the NATO Military Committee to take up the duties from December 1.
According to Maj Gen V. Vaikšnoras, service of the Dean of the NATO Military Committee is a honorary service - it is assumed by Military Representatives of NATO states at consent of their represented countries and Chairman of the NATO Military Committee.
Dean of the Military Representatives will be the officer who has served for the longest period as Military Representative. No Dean will serve for more than one year, nor will any officer serve more than once as Dean.
Dean of the NATO Military Committee chairs sittings of the Committee, and replaces Chairman of the NATO Military Committee or his Deputy in case of their absence. He is also in charge of social life and leisure of members of the NATO Military Committee.
Maj Gen V. Vaikšnoras has been Military Representative of Lithuania to NATO and the EU since 2008. Military Representation to NATO and the EU implements the key function of representing Chief of Defence of Lithuania in the NATO and the EU Military Committees.
NATO Military Committee is a NATO advisory structure at NATO Chiefs of Defence level. It is the main NATO's institution recommending to the North Atlantic Council on military and defence matters. The Committee also assists in decision-making regarding military operations and superintends their progress.
