On February 11 soldiers from different units of the Lithuanian Armed Forces were decorated after deploying home from international operations in the Republic of Iraq. Chief of the Defence Staff Maj Gen Gintautas Zenkevičius bestowed National Defence System Medals for Deployment to International Missions on 12 professional military service soldiers.
The decoration ceremony was held for instructors who served as part of the Danish Contingent in the U.S.-led Combined Joint Task Force - Operation Inherent Resolve and for soldiers of the Deployable Communication and Information Systems Module who were completing training and communications tasks at the NATO mission in Baghdad.
The NATO Mission Iraq (NMI) was launched in 2004 for training local security forces of the country.
The U.S.-led Combined Joint Task Force - Operation Inherent Resolve in Iraq: Lithuania has been maintaining a contribution of 6 military instructors since 2017. The Lithuanian soldiers serve in composition of the Danish Contingent at Al Asad airbase in the northwestern part of Iraq and help training local security forces.
