Lithuanian peacekeepers schooled together with Afghan youth

Troops of the Lithuanian-led Chaghcharan PRT visited the main school of Chaghcharan and stayed during a lesson with Afghan children, June 1.

„The idea of paying a visit to Sultan Saladin school emerged after hearing numerous questions from locals about the activities of the Lithuanian-led PRT in Ghowr with noticeable interest in Lithuanian peacekeepers. We thought it would be good if the children had the opportunity to meet Lithuanian troops in person and say a word to them. Besides, principal of the school welcomed our idea too," said Head of PRT-9 CIMIC Department Maj. Renatas Spėčius.

Several Lithuanian and Croatian troops were invited to join an English lesson. Class of over 50 children of various ages welcomed the guests enthusiastically and engaged in energetic communication with them. Peacekeepers asked the children questions in English, in the end of the class the most active participants were gifted with small presents. Children, in their turn, gave Lithuanians some lessons of Dari language speaking and spelling.

„It was a really warm experience to spend some time with those children and to look into those eyes shining with sincere interest in what we do. I am so glad that these kids, the future of Afghanistan, were really brave to ask questions, did not shy away from showing their knowledge, and were active participants of the improvised lesson," a Croatian officer said.

PRT is an active supporter of education Ghowr province and makes visits to provincial spots of education as often as it is possible. Lithuanian peacekeepers also support schools to help children acquire primary education, donate school-books, furniture, exercise books, backpacks, and writing items. Still a relatively significant part of schoolchildren in Ghowr study in open air. In such cases tents Lithuanian PRT donate become a shelter from the sun, heat and wind, and classes for spreading the light of education.
