Lithuanian military personnel decorated after returning from KFOR

October 18, after six months of peacekeeping and regional security tasks with the NATO-led Kosovo Force (KFOR), Lithuanian Contingent received the National Defence System medals FOR Multinational Deployments in recognition of their exemplary service and contribution to regional security.

“Security and stability in Europe do not come by default, its it protected by a sustained Allied commitment and readiness. The Lithuanian contribution in Kosovo is an important part of this effort. Even in view of the improving situation in the Balkans, NATO retains the forces and preparedness because stability in the region is the interest of the whole Europe. At the same time, this mission is an example of the strength of our strategic partnership with Germany: its troops strengthen Lithuania’s defence, while our servicemembers stand shoulder to shoulder with the German for security in Kosovo.  This is precisely the kind of reciprocal responsibility that the Alliance’s strength is grounded in,” said Vice Minister of National Defence Bronius Bieliauskas.

The Contingent formed by the Lithuanian Grand Duke Butigeidis Dragon Battalion and other unis of the Lithuanian Armed Forces completed patrolling, object security, rapid response and other tasks during the deployment period. They showcased excellent professional readiness, discipline and proficiency in a multinational environment while conducting the mission side by side with NATO Allied and partners forces.

Their place in the area of operation was filled in by the next Lithuanian Contingent formed by the 5th Territorial Unit of Vytis Military District, National Defence Volunteer Force. They will carry on with the contribution of the Lithuanian Armed Forces to the NATO-led mission advancing security and stability in the region.

By contributing to the NATO-led multinational Kosovo Force (KFOR) Lithuania supports the international efforts to provide a safe environment, maintain stability and protect the freedom of movement in the region.
