Lithuania delivered assistance to Ghor police

December 8, Chaghcharan PRT and Police Operational Mentor and Liaison Team (POML) donated several motorbikes to Afghan National Police of Ghor during a ceremony at the PRT base.

POMLT Commander Lt Col Vidmantas Žilakauskas discussed with Assistance Chief of Ghor police Col Zainallahbdin further prospects of close cooperation with local police officers.

„We hope that these vehicles will help Ghor police officers carry out more efficiently their duties of ensuring security and order in Chaghcharan ", said Lt Col V. Žilakauskas.

The Lithuanian-led PRT in Ghor is a joint civilian-military mission, a part of NATO's ISAF, that was launched in Ghor in summer of 2005. The main task of the mission is to help Government of Afghanistan to extend authority in the province, ensure security and create environment for provincial reconstruction. The 12th rotation of Lithuanian peacekeepers based on the Lithuanian Great Duke Algirdas Mechanised Infantry Battalion took over the mission from November.

The first rotation of POMLT began service in the ISAF mission together with PRT-12. The main aim of POMLT is to advice, teach, and by other means support readiness of Afghan National Police to complete the tasks under their mandate relevantly.

Prerequisites for the allied forces deployed in Afghanistan to finish the mission will be provided as soon as the country's National Security Forces are able to ensure security of the country and its people independently. In the present period major attention is paid to the projects of training and preparation of Afghan National Security Forces.

A team of the European Union Police Mission to Afghanistan (EUPOL) is also deployed to Ghor and works in coordination with Chaghcharan PRT.
