Beginning of asphalt works in Chaghcharan, provincial capital of Ghowr, were opened on July 14. Several of the main streets of Chaghcharan were selected for covering with bitumen layer for the first time in the history of Ghowr. The project was launched on the funds allocated By the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania for development cooperation as well as on financing from the national budget of Afghanistan.
To commemorate the event Commander Chaghcharan PRT-9 Col. Alvydas Šiuparis, Deputy Head of the Lithuanian Special Mission in Afghanistan Andrius Purvaneckas, representative of the Higher House of Afghanistan's Parliament, directors of departments of Chaghcharan administration, local religious leaders and other guests gathered at the Governor's Office at invitation of the Governor of Ghowr.
Representatives of Ghowr administration participating in the event stressed that it was just a beginning of big changes and jobs foreseen in the province and pointed out several of projects - constructions of hydroelectric power plant and Chaghcharan-Herat road - to be implemented in the future on the Governmental funding.
Commander PRT-9 Col. Alvydas Šiuparis said it was another step in provincial reconstruction and improvement of communications infrastructure referring to the project. Deputy Head of the Lithuanian Special Mission in Afghanistan Andrius Purvaneckas expressed delight that Lithuania could contribute to improvement of infrastructure in Ghowr and added that completion of large-scale projects would only be possible by joint efforts of Afghan Government and international community.
Later the meeting officials attended the opening ceremony where symbolic ribbon was cut to mark the beginning of asphalt works.
