July 13, diplomas of the basic first aid course graduation were presented to the Afghan National Police (ANP) officers at the Ghor Police Headquarters, Chaghcharan, Afghanistan. The trainees are the first among the Ghor police who to be instructed on independently rendering urgent medical aid for injured colleagues.
The training was conducted by the second rotation of the joint Lithuanian Armed Forces' and US Pennsylvania National Guard's Police Operational Mentoring and Liaison Team (POMLT). The course was organised by POMLT-2 and representatives of the EU Police Mission in Afghanistan (EUPOL).
"Timely and outright medical aid is the main factor in saving officers' lives, which makes me very happy to see the EU-donated first medical aid bags given to instructed police officers with a prospect of being used professionally to save health and lives of people," said initiator of the course, Commissioner Vytaras Ratkevičius, Commander of Chaghcharan Unit of EUPOL.
In the course POMLT-2 paramedics Cpl Aurimas Moročka and Sgt Nicolas Crouse familiarized Afghan policemen with the basics of fist medical aid, instructed them on examination and assessment of the need of action, recovery and compensation of vital functions, stabilization of the patient's condition until he receives professional medical assistance.
The joint Police Operational Mentoring and Liaison Team (POMLT) of the Lithuanian Armed Forces and the US Pennsylvania National Guard was deployed in Ghor in November of 2010. US and Lithuanian soldiers and Public Security Service officers scheduled the Basic Police Patrol Training Program, trained 93 Ghor policemen, conducts evaluation of Ghor police units, provides direct assistance and consultations to local policemen in their daily duties, and mediation in the development of logistics and personnel matters-related projects.
Implementation of the new NATO International Security Assistance Force strategy in Afghanistan draws an increasing attention to the projects of training national security forces. By delegating a second shift of POMLT jointly with USA Lithuania both makes a contribution to training Afghan security forces and increases assistance to Afghan security forces in Lithuania's area of responsibility in Ghor province where the main local security forces are police.
