Chief of Defence of Lithuania will attend NATO’s Military Committee meeting

On January 16 and 17 Chief of Defence of Lithuania Lt Gen Arvydas Pocius will attend a meeting of NATO's Military Committee in Brussels (Belgium).

At the meeting NATO Chiefs of Defence will address new aspects of implementing the new NATO Strategic Concept, the course of NATO's transformation, and the ongoing military operations in the Balkan Region and Afghanistan. The meeting will also address NATO's role in Afghanistan after the termination of the International Security Assistance Force's (ISAF) operation.

Lithuanian Chief of Defence will also attend meetings of the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council and the NATO-Russia Council.

During the visit in Brussels bilateral meetings with the Chiefs of Defence of NATO allies and partner states will also take place.

The Military Committee (MC) is the senior NATO's military body of command subordinate to the North Atlantic Council, Defence Planning Committee and the Nuclear Planning Group. The Committee is the primary source of military strategic decisions and advice to NATO's political decision-making body - the North Atlantic Council. Daily work of the Military Committee is done at the level of Military Representatives (MILREPs).

The Military Committee meets three times a year. Two of the annual meetings are held in Brussels and one is hosted by one of the NATO countries on a rotational basis.
