Bilateral meeting addresses assistance to Georgia in military conscription organization

On March 14–16 a delegation of the Georgian Armed Forces met with representatives of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Military Conscription and Recruitment Service (MCRS) to learn about the military conscription organization in Lithuania, visited a regional Military Conscription and Recruitment Division and more units of the Lithuanian Armed Forces. The guests also met with representatives of the Mobilization and Civil Resistance Department under the Ministry of National Defence.

The MCRS contributes to the development of Georgia’s military conscription organization with a discussion on shortfalls and sharing best practices. Every of such meetings facilitates updated estimation of the conscription model used in Lithuania,” said MCRS Head Arūnas Balčiūnas after the meeting.

The guest delegation was briefed on the organization and implementation of draught into the Mandatory Initial Military Service, the electronic random selection system and alternative ways to complete military service in Lithuania and, in their turn, familiarized the Lithuanian side with the current status of the Georgian conscription reform and challenge faced.

The Georgian delegation also toured the regional Panevėžys Military Conscription and Recruitment Division, King Mindaugas Hussar Battalion of the Land Force Infantry Brigade Iron Wolf, and the5th Territorial Unit of the Vytis Military District, National Defence Volunteer Force, to get the view of tactical level conscription in practice, service conditions provided for the young conscripts and military training routines.

The Georgian guests met with representatives of the Mobilization and Civil Resistance Department who shared the experience of their institution in developing and using the state mobilization system in Lithuania, briefed on the cooperation methods with different state and municipality-level institutions during the stage of preparation for mobilization and other possible crises. The guests were also familiarized with the concept of civil resistance and public education on nonviolent civil resistance.

The bilateral military cooperation between Lithuania and Georgia is conducted on the basis of bilateral annual plans. Both countries’ armed forces cooperate in the areas of military training and education, military conscription, cybersecurity and more. Land Force personnel are continually training at exercises in Lithuania and in Georgia, Lithuania is providing expert-level consultations and other types of assistance to the Georgian Armed Forces on its way to compliance with NATO standards.
