January 18, III Mechanised Infantry Company and anti-tank platoon of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Algirdas Mechanised Infantry Battalion began „Iron Eagle 2010" exercise in Gaižiūnai Military Area (Rukla Town, Jonava Distr.). During the exercise planned to last till January 22 staff of Algirdas Battalion will assess readiness of the company and the platoon to conduct defence operations.
The training will be held in company level according to Algirdas Battalion's warfare training plan and will encompass defence actions in company level with attached divisions.
The main goal of the week-length exercise is to assess readiness of platoons of III Mechanised Infantry Company and Anti-tank Platoon to fulfil tasks, and to train command group of the company by implementing command and control procedures.
III Mechanised Infantry Company and Anti-tank Platoon replaced Latvian units that were withdrawn from the Baltic Battalion and duty in NRF-14 in June 2009 and trained to conduct tasks in NRF-14 together with other troops of BALTBAT throughout the second half of 2009.
At the moment two mechanised companies, mortar platoon, anti-tank, staff and signal platoons of Algirdas Battalion joined other Lithuanian units in the Baltic Battalion in NRF-14. Duty in NATO Response Force rotation 14 began on January 1 and will last for half of a year.
