Additional response force deployed in Ghor province, Afghanistan

October 17, a platoon-sized unit of response force troops arrived at the Lithuanian-led Chaghcharan PRT compound. ISAF Regional Command West deployed military personnel in Chaghcharan on a temporary basis.

„Although in possession of all the means and skills necessary to carry out combat actions Lithuanian-led Ghor Provincial Reconstruction Team is a „non-combatant" unit on a peacekeeping mission since its members are restricted by certain limitations. RC-W troops have the mandate of conducting a wider spectrum of military operations so their presence will temporarily increase security level in Chaghcharan and surrounding areas while PRT will be able to carry on with their routine tasks - render assistance to the Government of Afghanistan in extending its authority in the province, to ensure security and to generate conditions for provincial development," said Chief of Defence Staff of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Brig Gen Algis Vaičeliūnas.

Additional means invoked to increase security in the PRT camp were engineer measures taken to increase infrastructure, and soldiers' reaction time to alerts was shortened.

ISAF sent in additional forces to Chaghcharan because of the decreased security in the province after the suicide bomber blew himself up near the PRT camp on October 13. No injuries occurred in the incident.
