June 21, military personnel of the 2nd shift of the Police Operational Mentoring and Liaison Team (POMLT-2) handed over several motorcycles to the police of Ghor at the base of the Lithuanian-led Chaghcharan Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT).
Chief of Police in Ghor Brig Gen Khudayar Qodosi emphasized his satisfaction with the close cooperation between the congenerous institutions, activity of POMLT-2 and the donation.
According to the Chief of local police, the received means of transportation that are in permanent shortage will be immediately distributed to policemen of Ghor who conduct patrols in the locations hardly accessible by other vehicles or where the most hostilities are enacted on motorcycles.
Motorcycles are irreplaceable and highly effective in mountainous regions of Ghor allowing to reach the incident location operatively as well as to respond to actions of insurgents using motorcycles.
Joint Police Operational Mentoring and Liaison Team (POMLT) of the Lithuanian Armed Forces and the Pennsylvania National Guard was introduced in Ghor in mid-November 2010. From the beginning of the mission US and Lithuanian military personnel, and officers of the Lithuanian Public Security Service have instructed over 40 members of the Afghan National Police and still 50 more are undergoing training.
POMLT have scheduled the Basic Police Patrol Training Program, conducts evaluation of Ghor police units, provides direct assistance and consultations to local policemen in their daily duties, and mediation in the development of logistics and personnel matters-related projects.
Implementation of the new NATO International Security Assistance Force strategy in Afghanistan draws an increasing attention to the projects of training national security forces. By delegating a second shift of POMLT jointly with USA Lithuania both makes a contribution to training Afghan security forces and increases assistance to Afghan security forces in Lithuania's area of responsibility in Ghor province where the main local security forces are police.
