In the Championship Lithuania will be represented by a basketball team of 14 members, troops of National Defence Volunteer Force at most. The team is coached by 1st. Lt. Mindaugas Kildišius attached to the 8th Territorial Unit of NDVF.
To select teams for the championship their results of the recent ten years were regarded. It will be the sixth World Military Basketball Championship for the Lithuanian team, silver-winners of the recent two championships. In 2008 they conceded to the team of the USA, organiser of the event, and in the World Military Basketball Championship held in Moscow in 2005 Lithuanians lost gold to the Russian team. „We sure hope to reach the highest step of the stand this year, especially bearing in mind that we are playing at home, where they say, even walls help you," said military athletes of the Lithuanian team before the championship.
Lithuanian Grand Duke Butigeidis Dragoon Training Regiment of the National Defence Volunteer Force will provide accommodation in Klaipėda for participants of the championship. Matches will take place in „Neptūnas" Sports Arena.
Participants of the championship will meet in subgroups on June 8-12, till semifinals on June 13. Winning teams will face one another in a fight for gold on June 14, 16.00 hrs.
The 49th World Military Basketball Championship held in Klaipėda will be the sixth CISM event hosted by Lithuania. There have already been world championships of handball, orienteering (twice, last autumn in Alytus for the second time), wrestling, and modern pentathlon.
To this moment CISM unites 131 nations. Lithuanian became a full-fledged member of the international sports organisation in 1994. There area around 100-120 continental and national championships and 10-12 world championships on the annual agenda of CISM; World Military Sports Games are organised on a four-year basis. The underlying idea of the organisation founded in 1948 is "friendship through sports". CISM defines its purpose as promotion of friendly relations between the military of the world through organisation of sports matches, promotion of sports in civilian society, implementation of humanitarian activities, and strenghthening the spirit of solidarity among the nations of the world.
