On March 31 Chief of Defence Lieutenant General Valdemaras Rupšys had a meeting with Commander of the NATO Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe United States Air Force General Tod Wolters in Vilnius.Generals discussed NATO measures of deterrence, regional security, as well as activities and defence tasks of the NATO military units in Lithuania.
“NATO enhanced Forward Presence in the eastern flank of the Alliance is very effective. We are sustaining four battalion-sized battlegroups in the Baltic Sea region. Manned from across the Alliance, the allied forces are completing tasks along with host forces and demonstrate real Alliance solidarity and collective defence commitment,” said Commander of the NATO Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe United States Air Force General Tod Wolters.
Chief of Defence of Lithuania Lt Gen Valdemaras Rupšys thanked Gen T. Wolters for respecting the commitments of NATO and the allies, for the NATO Baltic Air Policing Mission, NATO Force Integration Unit, NATO enhanced Forward Presence, and for excellent cohesion with the Lithuanian Armed Forces. NATO forces in Lithuania ensure a reliable deterrence and allow the Lithuanian Armed Forces to learn and improve.
“The Lithuanian NATO membership is primarily a commitment of our country to have armed forces that are manned, have a high morale and maintain high readiness – and able to defend from an aggressor, alone or with allies. NATO has been securing Lithuania the chance to develop as a state for 17 years now by sharing defence tasks in the spirit of solidarity and by helping fill capability gaps,” Lt Gen Valdemaras Rupšys said.
SHAPE is in charge for NATO force generation, operational planning and execution. It also provides command and control to capabilities contributes by allies and advises NATO’s military and political leadership on a range of military topics.
SHAPE, NATO’s main headquarters coordinates Alliance missions worldwide, it is based in Mons, Belgium, while the Allied Joint Force Command (JFC) Brunssum, the Netherlands, is responsible for Central Europe.
