On January 9 Commander of the Lithuanian Air Force Major General Almantas Leika attended the assumption of command ceremony for the new Commander of U. S. Army Europe (USAREUR) Lieutenant General Donald M. Campbell Jr. in Wiesbaden, Germany, by a formal invitation.
"The Lithuanian Land Force develops close cooperation with U.S. Army Europe, therefore this occasion was a great opportunity to meet the new USAREUR commander. The U.S. Army will remain among Lithuania's key partners in military cooperation next year as well as when the withdrawal of troops from the mission in Afghanistan is completed," said Commander of the Lithuanian Land Force Maj Gen A. Leika.
At the ceremony Commander of the U.S. European Command Admiral James G. Stavridis transferred the USAREUR colours to the new commander Lt Gen D. M. Campbell Jr. The ceremony was also attended by representatives of the USAREUR units and armies of several NATO countries, and other guests.
Lt Gen D. M. Campbell Jr. will be the 38th USAREUR commander since its establishment in 1942. He formally assumed the duties on December 3, 2012. Prior to the new assignment General headed III Corps in Texas (U.S.A.). Former USAEUR Commander Lieutenant General Mark Hertling led U.S. Army Europe from March 25, 2011 till his retirement on December 4, 2012.
U.S. Army in Europe trains and leads Army Forces in support of U.S. European Command and Headquarters. It is responsible for training and preparing full spectrum capable forces for global employment, supporting the allies and building partner capacity and capability and continual efforts to improve the readiness and quality of life of the soldiers, army families and civilian personnel.
