On May Chief of Defence of Lithuania Lt Gen Arvydas Pocius received a phone call from Chief of Defence of Latvia Maj Gen Raimonds Graube where Latvia's General thanked troops of the Aitvaras Squadron of the Lithuanian Special Operations Forces (LITHSOF) for a professional and committed fulfillment of duty in the south of Afghanistan and wished a speedy recovery and return to the line for the three Lithuanian peacekeepers injured in Afghanistan.
Troops of the Latvian Armed Forces have been involved in the activity of LITHSOF Aitvaras since November 2011.
On May 3 three Lithuanian peacekeepers were injured when during on a mounted patrol an unidentified explosive device detonated under their vehicle. At the moment there is no threat to any of their lives.
LITHSOF personnel have been involved in the NATO International Security Assistance Force's operation in the south of Afghanistan since 2007. During the mission Lithuanian peacekeepers render military assistance to the Afghan local forces, arrange seminars and military training opportunities for the Afghan National Police, and complete other tasks.
